‘Like most women in these situations I didn’t say anything but I thought a lot about what I’d say if I ever saw him again’
Following the Harvey Weinstein allegations, with the Hollywood producer now accused of multiple incidents of sexual harassment and three incidents of rape, more women have been feeling brave enough to come forward, with actor Ben Affleck facing allegations of his own.
The 45-year-old actor seemed shocked by the Harvey Weinstein allegations, taking to his Twitter account to condemn the producer and describe how the claims made him feel sick.
‘This is completely unacceptable, and I find myself asking what I can do to make sure this doesn’t happen to others,’ he stated. ‘We need to do better at protecting our sisters, friends, co-workers and daughters. We must support those who come forward, condemn this type of behaviour when we see it and help ensure there are more women in positions of power.’
While many applauded the actor for seemingly taking a stand, following Lena Dunham’s call for men to denounce Weinstein, one twitter user wasn’t impressed, quick to point out that Ben Affleck’s remarks were actually pretty hypocritical.
‘[Ben Affleck] also grabbed Hilarie Burton’s breasts on TRL once. Everyone forgot though’, posted Twitter user @ShaniceBrim, to which Hilarie Burton herself replied, ‘I didn’t forget.’
The incident saw Ben Affleck grope Hilarie Burton live on TV while she was co-hosting MTV’s Total Request Live in 2003.
‘I remember when that happened and never forget about it. We see you,’ Shanice tweeted, addressing Burton directly, to which the actress replied, ‘Seriously, thank you for that. I was a kid.’
She then took to her twitter once more to praise the brave women who have come forward in the past weeks. ‘Girls, I’m so impressed with you brave ones. I had to laugh back then so I wouldn’t cry. Sending love’ she posted.
With the Twitter conversation taking the internet by storm and videos of the incident resurfacing, Ben Affleck took to his account last night to publicly apologise for his behaviour, tweeting ‘I acted inappropriately toward Ms. Burton and I sincerely apologize’.
‘I would also love to get an apology from Ben Affleck who grabbed my ass at a Golden Globes party in 2014,’ tweeted make up artist Annamarie Tendler, after his public apology to Hilarie. ‘He walked by me, cupped my butt and pressed his finger into my crack. I guess he tried to play it like he was politely moving me out of the way and oops touched my butt instead of my lower back? Like most women in these situations I didn’t say anything but I thought a lot about what I’d say if I ever saw him again.’
And it’s not just these two women who are voicing their anger against the Oscar winning actor – actress Rose McGowan is also unimpressed.
The 44-year-old actress is one of the women who has accused Weinstein, with McGowan receiving a settlement of $100,000 for an incident that took place while she was filming Scream in 1997, when she was in her twenties.
In response to Ben Affleck’s seemingly shocked statement of condemnation of Harvey Weinstein this week, Rose tweeted back angrily that Affleck had known all along.
‘”GODDAMNIT! I TOLD HIM TO STOP DOING THAT” you said that to my face. The press conf I was made to go to after assault. You lie,’ she tweeted, before adding. ‘Ben Affleck fuck off.’
She later took to Instagram to inform her followers that her Twitter account had been suspended.
