Here’s what we know so far…
The Kardashians are the masters of self-promotion, whether it’s naked selfies or angering animal rights protestors with a snake covered in the Louis Vuitton logo (we wish we were joking).
It was hardly surprising therefore that Kim found herself at the centre of an Instagram controversy again this week – but at first glance, it was hard to understand the fuss around the seductive shot. Then we saw the caption.
The post is an ad for a diet company, and the lollipop in the picture is an appetite suppressant (again, we wish we were joking).
Here’s the post in full: ‘#ad You guys… @flattummyco just dropped a new product. They’re Appetite Suppressant Lollipops and they’re literally unreal. They’re giving the first 500 people on their website 15% OFF so if you want to get your hands on some… you need to do it quick! #suckit.’
This isn’t the first time that Kim has advertised the diet company in one of her Insta posts: in January, she posted a picture of her in her underwear drinking a meal replacement shake.
Needless to say, Kim’s followers were not happy to see their idol endorse this new diet aid, and many have accused her of promoting unhealthy eating habits.
One Insta comment read, ‘This makes me so sad. Is this woman not rich enough??? Using her fame to promote harmful appetite suppressants. Talk about a great role model ’, while another added, ‘You have so many young followers who need to learn how to have a healthy relationship with food – this is really irresponsible for you to market this.’
Even fellow celebrities have felt the need to condemn the sentiment in Kim’s post. Jameela Jamil, star of The Good Place and founder of the body positivity campaign ‘I Weigh’, posted:
This struck a chord with other Twitter users, too, who spoke about their experiences with eating disorders:
Sorry Kim, but appetite suppressants? We’ll take a hard pass.
