This week it was announced that Meghan Markle will be patron to four charities. It was rumoured that she would take over the Queen’s role at the National Theatre, and the news was (accidentally) confirmed on their website on Thursday. She’ll also be working closely with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, animal rescue charity The Mayhew and female employment cause Smart Works.
The palace tweeted: ‘The Duchess of Sussex will become Patron of four organisations that reflect the causes and issues with which she has long been associated including the arts, access to education, support for women and animal welfare.’
And Meghan was quick to start her new job, visiting Smart Works yesterday to talk to those who work with the charity which dresses and trains women for job interviews.
She said of the initiative: ‘It’s not just donating your clothes and seeing where they land, but really being a part of each other’s success stories as women, right? It’s not just hand-me-downs, it’s saying, ‘This is the blazer I wore that helped me win that interview.’
‘So to know, as a woman coming in, that you have so many other women believing in you on all the next phases is the piece that makes it so special.’
During her visit, the Duchess spoke to former Vogue Editor, Lady Juliet Hughes-Hallet, about a time when she tried to donate a handbag – but it didn’t quite go to plan. She had suggested that one woman use it, but the lady in question wasn’t so keen.
‘The last time I was here I suggested a purse, and it was one that I had donated,’ Meghan explained.
‘And she didn’t like it!’
The Duchess added: ‘I was like, ‘Oh, OK’. I thought it was great.’
