‘Guarding a member of the Royal Family is never easy.’
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle always make an effort to speak to well-wishers while on royal duty. The couple talk candidly to the fans that they meet; only recently Meghan told a Birkenhead local her due date.
But what we don’t see when the royals are out and about on business is the immense amount of work that goes into keeping them safe. While Meghan likes to be in the thick of it when it comes to meeting members of the public, one royal insider has issued a stark warning to the Duchess of Sussex.
Ken Wharfe, Princess Diana’s former bodyguard, spoke about the pressures of protecting the royal family in his Daily Mail column. The 69-year-old was Diana’s body guard for eight years, and has also worked for Prince William and Prince Harry.
He explained that while people believe the job is all glitz and glamour, it’s a huge responsibility.
‘To an outsider, the life of a Royal protection officer must seem impossibly glamorous – jetting off to exotic locations, rubbing shoulders with famous names and having the safety of one of the most recognised people on the planet in your hands,’ he explains.
‘But while aspects of that are true, guarding a member of the Royal Family is never easy. The demands are immense and you can’t relax for a moment.’
And while Diana was known as ‘the people’s princess’ thanks to her willingness to mingle with the public, Ken explains that it made his job very difficult.
‘Diana was hardly the easiest boss,’ he admitted.
‘Like Meghan, she wanted to get close to people and to lead as ordinary a life as she could.’
