Getting your foot on the property ladder can feel like an impossible task. Only recently it was announced that the Help to Buy ISA will be dropped later this year, and according to a study by Lloyds bank the average house price in the UK has increased from £180,548 in 2013 to £248,233 in 2018 – while earnings have risen by just 11% over the same period.

Fair to say that things aren’t looking great for first time buyers.

But price comparison site Comparethemarket.com has reviewed the average price of a property in 29 cities and towns across the UK to determine which places are viable options for those wanting to buy their own home – and which ones, well, may not be.

At the top of the least affordable cities list is London (quelle surprise) with an average deposit coming in at just over £72,000. Gulp.

However, once you branch out from the capital things are a little less eye-watering, with Bradford and Kingston upon Hull offering much more affordable housing.
